Early Life and Education
Tsakopoulos Kounalakis was born into a family of Greek immigrants, Angelo and Sofia Tsakopoulos. Her father, a successful developer, founded AKT Development Corporation and was a major contributor to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.
She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College and an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley.
Business and Philanthropy
Before entering public service, Tsakopoulos Kounalakis served as President of AKT Development Corporation, one of California's largest land development firms.
She and her husband, journalist Marcos Kounalakis, established two endowed professorships in Hellenic Studies at Stanford University (in honor of Konstantinos Mitsotakis) and Georgetown University, fostering the study of Athenian democracy. They also founded a lecture series on democracy and international relations at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
